[Belgium] Spontaneous day trip to Bruges, Belgium

“Belgium is the best kept secret in Europe. Visiting medieval cities, quaint towns, gothic cathedrals and town halls, castles and carillons will keep you busy during the day. At night go to a pub, there are more than 350 delicious beers to chose from. The reputation of our gourmet food makes the French jealous and it is almost impossible to find chocolates as good as ours!” — “Welcome to Belgium” Geographia.com

A fairy tale city, Bruges

Starting the exploration right with ice cream and waffle

“Bruges, the capital of West Flanders in northwest Belgium, is distinguished by its canals, cobbled streets and medieval buildings. Its port, Zeebrugge, is an important center for fishing and European trade.”

The boat ride down the canals was unmistakably the highlight of the day

Out of nowhere were the swans!

I came across so many surprising details that didn’t seem necessary or practical at all. They were there, maybe for no reason but were wonderful, serene but stately. That’s how Bruges captures the restless heart and modern mind.

“In the city center’s Burg square, the 14th-century Stadhuis (City Hall) has an ornate carved ceiling. Nearby, Markt square features a 13th-century belfry with a 47-bell carillon and 83m tower with panoramic views.”
Market Plaza

The birth country of my beloved frites

Delighted by this charming city, its food (it only takes waffles, fries and chocolate to convince), friendly people and dreamy surroundings

Reluctant to head back to the train station

I don’t know if I will have the chance to return to Bruges, but I just might...and chill at the Market Plaza like these two.
